i think SGA does best when they are doing their stand alone episodes. (with the exception of the Storm/Eye) I think what happened to SGA is Battlestar Galactica...
I mean I knew Stargate as a franchise wasn't as good as Farscape...but with Farscape off the air Stargate was the best you're going to get for your sci-fi/action/adventure fix/needs.
Well when BSG came along and they did such a kick ass awesome job all across the board, suddenly SGA and SG-1 started to look like the poor relations. (though I think some weak episodes here and there didn't help their case) However, I still enjoy the characters and for the most part I love the dialogue in SG-1 and SGA (falling in love with Vala) that there is some merit to the show. It's just they need to get back to what they are good at which is more action/adventure and less politics.
