Wizard's First Rule/Stone of Tears by Terry Goodkind

Is it just me or did these books just not stand up to the test of time?

Back when I was 18/19 these were two of my favorite fantasy novels (though even at that time I recognized that Robin Hobb's works were so much better) but anyways I really enjoyed the story. I liked the characters, the magic, the plot, and was rather entertained.

So I'm re-reading these books and it keeps hitting me that the main characters are a Mary Sue and a Marty Sue and there is a lot of explaining going on. The story is still okay enough for me to read I've read worse in fan fiction but on the flip I've read a hell of a lot better fan fiction than what I'm getting out of these books. the only reason I'm still reading is because I needed a break from fan fiction and wanted to read something longer that wasn't a romance novel.

Basically, as I'm reading this book I keep thinking to myself that I can write better than this and how did this guy get so popular?

Though, as a teenager I truly couldn't get enough of these books so maybe that's why.
