On Saturday I got a prescription for antibodics for the UTI infection and well I've been taking the pills like prescribed well last night I got a small rash on one arm but didn't think anything of it so this morning I took another pill and now the rash is spreading, right now it's just itchy and uncomfortable, but I'm thinking this is an allergic reaction to the medicine.

I'm not sure if I should keep taking the pills? On one hand, you're supposed to finish your antibodics even if you're already feeling better, but i also don't want this allergic reaction to get worse. :(

Also I can't afford to go back to the doctors, it already cost a lot of money on Saturday just to see a nurse practictioner and I don't want the infection thing to come back.

I thought maybe if I took a benadryl with the medicine the antistamines would help counteract the allergic reaction...

I got another 6 or 8 hours before I'm due to take the next pill so I got time to think about this and listen to any and all advice I can get.

Can you at least call the doctor and ask for advice? I really don't think an allergy to an anti-biotic is anything to fool with. Maybe they could prescribe a different drug?

*hugs* I hope you feel better soon!

I second the 'call them' vote. They should be able to recognize allergic reaction symptoms over the phone, and ought to be willing to write you a different script for something else. At the very least, they shouldn't charge you for a second office visit if they want to do a recheck. A reaction is really not something to mess with, as it can go into dangerous territory pretty quick.

As far as finishing the antibiotic goes, so long as they switch you onto something else, that's not a big concern. The usual issue is that they don't want drug-resistant bugs kicking around in your system, which can happen if you feel better and stop taking the meds early. With a new drug, they ought to all get wiped out in the end.

Hope you feel better before long, in any case.

Call the clinic bfeore you take even one more. A second visit should be case management, and switching you to another antibiotic shouldn't be a big deal. *HUGS*

Call them. They will quickly decide whether a full visit is even needed, or if they just want to switch your antibiotic or if you've taken enough to really get the infection.

Call. No charge for phone calls.
