I just saw the first episode and it was kind of blah...does it get any better????

I think it does. For me, the hook into the series is the common soldiers more than the political hijinks. As well as the day to day rituals of life, so foreign to the moderns world. I'd imagine Rome is not for everyone, though, so if you keep going and it doesn't grab you, no harm is done.

I'd recommend you keep going. Later on, the show gets more into the polical goings-on between Pompey and Caesar - and how members of the Senate keep switching sides between them. The intrigue and politics surrounding the Julii family get pretty interesting too.

As for me, I'd watch for the awesome costumes & set designs alone. ;)
