Thinking about a SGA fic
Mar. 11th, 2006 10:54 pmI'm currently reading Three Fates by
allusory_tea I know some people aren't happy about it getting released one part a day. I think if a story is finished it's actually easier to take the one .doc file and convert the entire thing to html instead of breaking it up into smaller parts...I'm not quite understanding the author's reasoning for only posting one part a day.
Tonight, I realized I'm losing interest in the story, which kind of sucks because I like the premises but...there's just not enough per part to keep my interest. I think as a whole this story will rock but individually it's just not happening.
Basically, I'm just now understanding why people avoid WIP like the plague, unless the WIP is posted in really big chunks like 60 or 70 pages at a time (depending on length of the story) 10,000 words just isn't enough to sustain dramatic tension and introduce new things...I think the only time I actually got interested in the story when I was able to read 3 parts in a row but by the time the next part got posted I've already moved on and invested my interest in something else, and I think because it's not a WIP it's not written in the style that keeps you coming back for more? Like none of the parts really stand by themselves, they are meant to be read as a whole...yeah I think I'm going to have to wait until this one is completed before I try reading it again.
I just finished reading
lamardeuse's Getting to Know You series and while I think some parts were longer than others it worked as a WIP because each episode is self contained in the sense that each part relates to an SGA episode, but it managed to weave the core thread of Sheppard/McKay's relationship together throughout.

Date: 2006-03-12 07:03 am (UTC)I try to do that with most of the wips that pass by my friendslist, unless the story is really really long, in which case I do save up a bunch of parts to read all at once. Something like Mitch's recent Viking Sky is a completely different story, of course- read all of those as soon as they came out. Of course, that was designed and written to be serial. But with regular stories, I prefer to read everything they have for me at once, most probably because I love long stories and marathon reading.
