I found the sga_hate community and it's just disgusting...a bunch of people who are too damn cowardly to tell people what they think to their faces.

I get that people have different opinions about authors stories and don't always agree with others...but come on if you don't like someone's writing style or the way they post their fics there are nicer and better ways to let those people know, instead of slamming them annoymously.

Some people are just assholes, plain and simple. I don't even want to compare them to poisonous snakes because well poisonous snakes have more honor and purpose in life than some of these ya-hoos posting their crap in this stupid community.

I had no clue there were this many idiots in the sga fandom. Obviously they need to find another fandom if they hate so many things about it.

I agree so completely. I wish I could be one of those people that just shurgs and says that's just part of fandom, but it bothers me. There's no need for it, and it's kind of that mob mentality, because there's no reasoning with any of them when they've got the cover of being anonymous. It's not debate, it's not critcism, it's just flames, pure and simple.

I don't know how much it will help, but have a little good to balance the evil, sga_love cheered me up a bit.

checking out the community you sent my way. :) I felt kind of depressed myself after just skimming the list. I mean there is no call for saying what they said in the community. I mean how are new authors supposed to feel comfortable posting their fics if the ones who've been around awhile and actually are good authors get crap like this? I mean there are some shy people out there who have wonderful stories to share and some may get scared about by this kind of nastiness.

grr need to stop thinking about this...going to see what's happening in the sga_love community. :)

Hee, I know what you mean, but I think the only thing that really bothers me about sga_love is that it will probably have trouble getting past the double digits comment wise, and sga_hate is already upwards of something like four hundred.

And that is just so depressing.

The comm is actually doing a lot better than I expected. I shouldn't be surprised, because there are tons of awesome people in this fandom, and I think my faith in fandom in general has been restored. Hee.

isn't it just as demoralizing to find rec lists without your stories recced in them? I don't know maybe for me I've long ago accepted if I'm ever going to make any rec lists or love meme's I really really need to improve my writing. However, I think pointing out things you love about fandom (even if it's just certain stories) isn't as demoralizing as pointing out people you hate or stories you hated and being a real bitch about it.

Personally, hate memes piss me off more than they depress me. Love meme's can depress me but only if I start thinking "why hasn't anyone mentioned me?" however, I gotta admit what I love about the SGA fandom isn't necessarily all the stories (though that's a big plus) it's meeting all the really cool people who write these stories, make vids, share my love of fiction and tv and finding common interests outside of fan fiction.

I really like you as a person, and I enjoy your stories. I always considered you a very popular author and I guess it didn't occur to me that you might have the same doubts about your writing that I have. In meme's like this I should probably just point to my rec lists because everyone there deserves mention but that would still leave out the women who beta read, create icons, make vids and then all the women who moderator LJ communities. Basically, I feel like everyone who takes part in sending feedback, creating stuff, writing meta they all deserve some sort of recognition and a love meme is a good way to getting some of that out. Though I think a lot of people focus on the writing and story aspect when it really is everyone who participates that creates the community as a whole. I'm not sure how to get across a big thank you to everyone who contributes something positive to a fan community.

But certainly a thread of positive stuff is much better than a thread of negative stuff. At least in my opinion.

You are very kind and I appreciate your nice words! And really, I don't think there's a single writer who doesn't feel nervous upon posting something new - everyone wants her or his writing to be appreciated and thought positively of and recced!

Which is why you contribute something positive by commenting on stories you like, and even more, by reccing those stories so that others might be inclined to read them. You're totally right that there's perhaps too much focus on the fic and art - but those are the most visible fandom contributions, maybe. Community moderators, challenge organizers, newsletter editors, beta readers, icon-makers, media distributors, writers of thinky meta - all of these contribute to the fandom. And so do the people who do nothing but view and read and comment or feedback - every performer needs an audience.

God, that's awful.

I haven't clicked into it, as yet. But...just the thought alone is so off-putting.

I mean, if you don't like something, you just don't read it, yeah? It's not as if anyone's standing on the back of the reader's neck pushing them to do anything they don't want to.

Why would people read stuff just to bitch about it? Where's the joy in that. Isn't this meant to be creative and joyful - or at the very least a vaguely encouraging environment that people feel free to show off their creative endeavours. Jesus - that just really pisses me off. I'm going to try and ignore my curiosity and not look into it, because I need to follow my own advice and not read utter shit.

(May I ask - was there any helpful advice on the site, or was it all just people being uselessly cruel?)

It seems to be the latest thing. Apparently there's one for Buffy and a couple other fandoms. People hide behind anonymity and it's just... well, honestly, I think people like that say things to intentionally stir crap up and because they have nothing better to do. Too bad, huh?

yep it really is too bad I mean if they put that much effort into writing fics, or making new music vids that would be awesome...but to put your effort into tearing people down it just pisses me off. :( and I'm one of those that feels like I need to defend and ends up fanning the flames even higher...sigh
