my thoughts about SGA

I rarely post my thoughts about SGA. I love the fandom. I enjoy the show but for the most part I'm not exactly great at describing why some parts work better for me than others. Thank god there are other people out there who give more thought to the show than me. I found meta/essay? tonight that really gave voice to one of my main problems with SGA after season one.

I love Rodney as a character, he's one of the reasons I really looked forward to season 2 however they've changed his character from the quirky scientist I really liked.
I'm not going to stop watching the show because for the most part it does entertain me, and there is a lot I still love about the show.
I'll be honest. I really liked this episode. It was funny...however about halfway through or probably even sooner...it hit me that this guy Lucious had raped who really knows how many women? he only claimed 6 wives...that doesn't mean he hadn't slept with just those six. Now I'm hoping the writers didn't intend for this to be pure comedy because that means they really have no taste at all and not a clue that women may not find the idea of a man drugging them and having sex with them while under the influence may not make them happy. However, I got the sense that they were trying to make Lucious creepy and I think what really sold the episode for me was the part when John was in the cell and Lucious taunted him about it being just a matter of time before John would be under his thrall....I really got shivers down my spine. John's expression was perfect. (this is the type of stuff I look for in non-con stories) I was kind of surprised they went there...
Basically Irresistable confused me. One one level I found it funny, and then when I think about it I realize it's really not funny at all...and then John was incredibly hot and I'm shallow enough to admit I'll love any episode where John gets that hard expression on his face like he'll rip someone's head off with his bare hands.
I also loved the part where McKay admitted that Ronon HELD HIM TO THE WALL until Lucious's drug worked it's way through McKay. I imagine how scared Rodney must have been because he knew what would happen to him and he couldn't protect himself from losing control over his mind, and after the drug got ahold of him I think he would have done ANYTHING Lucious wanted.
I'm not sure if this would have been a better episode if they skipped out the funny and went straight for BSG drama with real consequences...or if Lucious really only used the drug to get people to like him but didn't have 6 wives and come onto anyone....I think by trying to do both they just confused everyone...but I'm honestly not sure they could have taken the drama route and done a good job with it.
The main reason I think I held back so long about voicing what I think about the episodes is because I noticed that a lot of people are asking those of us who don't see all the shiny "why are we still watching if we find things wrong with the show?" I think the main reason for me is because for everytime they do something "wrong" they do something "right." :) And honestly I think the ratio is skewed towards doing more right than wrong on most episodes. Though
rivier essay about Rodney brought up and said a lot better than I ever could a lot of what is going wrong with SGA for me. If you are a fan of Rodney and want to see him taken seriously (or as seriously as he was in season 1) then just about every episode is going to be a bit of a dissapointment.

I am a huge Rodney fan.
Date: 2006-08-06 04:59 am (UTC)I guess we'll just have to disagree, because while I see clownish moments, I also see moments of great strength and heroism, and I think I have to do the math and think ... what's the bigger component of who he is? In the end, the fact he's still there, and that people rely on him (even if he occasionally makes people roll their eyes) is what I come away with.
I also frame this with the idea that ... Rodney's coping skill is to be loud and a bit of prick. That's how he bulldozers through, gets himself to point B.
I don't know. I think ... we accept that sometimes some writers will do little dumb things from episode to episode to suit the story they're trying to tell, and look for the overall big picture of the character, the overall arc of him. And Rodney, while fucking up and whinging sometimes and way overthinking a lot of times, is *still* there, still pulling miracles out of his ass, and caring about people.
Which, you know? Is the guy I met in first season.
*shrug*

Date: 2006-08-06 05:29 am (UTC)I think Rodney is okay in most episodes it's just a few where I think they go overboard with the humor at Rodney's expense.
anyway, there is no right or wrong interpretation for Rodney. I'm really glad you responded to my post even if we don't entirely agree on this subject. :) I see your pov and it's okay with me. :)
