SGA torrent people you are letting me down
Dec. 5th, 2006 06:33 pmokay today has been a little frustrating in the sense that there are no 350MB versions of SGA available to download and the one person that seems to have recorded and shared the file did it at 250MB to save time? I'm really not sure what the reasoning is but honestly I could have waited an extra hour or two to watch the show at 350MB.
Basically, I think the groups that normally encode Atlantis are sleeping on the job and if it weren't for the one person that shared the original 250MB atlantis file there would be nothing to watch...I'm sure she didn't realize when she got this file up quickly that a whole day would pass without any 350MB torrents showing up. Last week there were copies already on the net by 10am Tuesday. I'm pretty sure that's what happened.
I'm still debating on waiting or not to wait to see what happened this episode.
edit: I know I probably shouldn't complain considering no one is paying these torrent people to encode these episodes and share them...but I still feel like kicking ant piles over.

Date: 2006-12-06 12:45 am (UTC)There's no 350 meg release because the encoders are not producing it yet, it's still only 3 weeks into an incredibly under advertised new half of a season, it takes time for these things to come up to the instant we're used to.
We didn't know when we decided (I was in on the decision) but we figured we'd continue to do the early distribution through her until we saw that the encoders who can do the nice jobs had really caught up.

Date: 2006-12-06 01:09 am (UTC)The program itself needs to do good things with the information it's given as well. *shrug* It's not like she CHOSE the file size, the program did. There are ways TO choose the filesize, but that's a whole 'nother kettle of wax as well.
As for the coders, well shit happens and there's plenty of repeats for the episode, one will come up eventually.

Date: 2006-12-06 01:44 am (UTC)i've never really talked with the person who encoded the 250MB version so I'm not sure what her setup is like. I'm not upset with her or anything. I just figured she made a quick copy, which does take less time, and assumed the better quality torrent version would be up a little later, which is a rather valid assumption because 99.9% of the time the torrent versions go up the next day at some point.

Date: 2006-12-06 02:32 am (UTC)She was pretty busy with schoolwork, assignments and such. I believe the reason she was able to encode it was because she was up late working anyway and had the computer on. It's also her first/second time encoding. She did it because a couple of us asked and said that we wouldn't mind a low quality ep.
I have ripped from DVD which is fairly easy and I have tried converting pure digital streams into avi and believe me, it's not a 1 or 2 step process. It actually took 5 or 6 steps and there are many programs to use and then, often, you get problems with audio/video sync. It's also complicated and requires a few hours and a fast computer (at least 1 Gb ram).
I haven't been successful in it (yet!). :D One day I'll figure it out!
I do admire the people who encode the 350Mb or HR-HDTV versions.
I'm guessing the torrents are taking a while because not many people are aware that Canada is showing SGA - and it's only on cable.

Date: 2006-12-06 02:39 am (UTC)I'm kind of new at encoding myself, and you're right it's a bitch. I still get mixed results so I'm really not sure what the time difference is between a 250 and 350 version?
I've been using DVDx....the new Ultra edition seems to work pretty good though I'm still trying to figure out how to use avisynth scripts and VirtualDubMod.
I think I need to post to some of the torrent forums asking for SGA torrents because while I think everyone should know about SGA I'm getting the feeling that maybe this show isn't as popular as I assumed. :(

Date: 2006-12-06 02:41 am (UTC)Okay this makes a lot more sense now. I was wondering why anyone would encode an low quality episode. doing it for friends on request...that really makes sense to me.
