but don't really think about often but today it hit me again. The more I love the fan fiction in a fandom the less I enjoy the source show.

Last night's episode of Hunted reminded me of this fact. I think I could look at each season as a single story maybe....but none of them could match up with the awesomeness of Maygra's fics like Reap the Wild Wind or False Comforts or Out of this Darkness. (just one example out of many) Or

Yet the source show inspires these great stories so obviously there is something good here and I enjoy the show on a superficial level but I think I get all my emotional needs met from the fan fiction.

I think it comes back to a novel is always, well 99.9% of the time, better than the movie.

I couldn't agree more! I think part of the fact that I find more pleasure in fan fiction is that the mind works to develop the scenery, the sets and places the characters in them. On TV you get what the director wants you to see. When you read the written word you are getting the writers ideas but using your own imagination to create the setting to place it in. I find that the more I read of a series the more the actual shows start looking cartoony (is that a word even) or cheaply made. My mind is richer that most of the budgets allowed for TV. LOL Also most people read the stories that place their characters in situations you would like to see them in. On TV you again get what the writers want each week, not necessarily what you want to see. I think everyone who reads enjoys it more than the visuals on the set. Although I do like looking at the pretty men everyweek!

Huh, maybe it's because I'm still pretty new to fan fiction, but the more I've gotten into the fic, the more I've come to love the show, and the more I love the show the more I love the fic, and it's this whole cyclical relationship that has me squeeing over the whole fandom like I'm half my age... Then again, I've read in other fandoms besides SPN, and the same thing hasn't happened, so maybe I just like watching the pretty men every week too. ;)
