I wrote a Sherlock story about Winnie the Pooh as every child's reading (plot point was that John had never read the books). I was surprised by how many readers of the story said they'd never read them, either.
I think for anyone growing up in the United States/English speaking countries it is far to easy too assume that everyone else had the same books growing up. (or watched the same cartoons) or at least it is for me...I'm trying to be better about that.
