I just finished watching the episode and here are some of my thoughts (not very deep thoughts, but my thoughts nonethless)....um spoilers behind the cut.

Okay I'm going to contradict myself, I liked the episode but I wasn't completely satisfied with it.

I'm going to have to watch this episode again to catch all the dialogue sometimes I think they talked too fast.

This is my first impression post. After I watch it a second time, maybe it'll click for me, or I'll notice more details.... Or I'll enjoy it more because my expectations aren't too high.

Anyway onto my informal analysis...

Here is the goodstuff:

Sheppard/McKay (they had a lot of scenes together and it was great) I'm so superficial.
Teyla/Ronon (I loved their scenes together)
Ronon/Weir (very amusing moment together)
Caldwell (still being himself)
The Daedalus is actually used for once...
They did not fall into the same old tired cliche of John getting stuck in the virtual reality.
Loved the new set: finally not on planet that looks like Vancouver.

the Bad stuff:

I'm not going to go into much detail about the costumes, all I can say is the Ancients did NOT have style.

The story: I didn't feel it, possibly because it felt rushed and I'm tired of these damn "time limit" stories, where the enemy arrives just as the good guys finish whatever they were doing, and the enemy gets blown to tiny bits. It's just too easy. Though there were moments of tension, but come on would McKay forget that once he disconnects the Wraith from the machine it'll wake up and come after him??? I don't think that's something you'll forget, but at least he was armed. I want to say sloppy writing.

Also, how did the Wraith find out who the first officer was. There were hundreds of bodies in those pods...and he just happened to find the first officer? I guess they were pretty good at hacking the ancient computer...

Also why the hell did the Wraith not send more people once they found the ship? Do wraith darts travel interstellar?

The pacing of the episode was slow in some parts and rushed in others.

There weren't any real plot holes from what I can see, it was a decent episode, it's just I think I want MORE and I'm not sure where exactly I want that more applied to.

I think I want BSG type storytelling but in Stargate Atlantis. I mean come on, not a whole lot is really happening in BSG but every episode i've seen has me captivated the entire time I'm watching. I feel more for the characters already and we've only seen them in less than 22 episodes. (not including the mini-series). I've got tears in my eyes watching BSG and I haven't reached that point with SGA. SG-1 has brought tears to my eyes a few times, mostly during the first two seasons. cough...Need...cough..

but for a generic action episode this was better than average. I guess I need to be honest, the main reason I'm still watching is because I love Sheppard and McKay. Though I think I get more tears in my eyes reading fan fiction with these two guys. [livejournal.com profile] auburnnothenna has made me cry enough where I needed tissues for my nose after reading some of her stuff. Now that's powerful writing.

I think after watching this a second time I might have more coherent thoughts about the episode and why some parts worked and others didn't. But anyway these are just my intial reactions.
