Is anyone going to this convention? http://www.severalunlimited.com/revelcon/index.html

I plan to be there Saturday. So far the panels sound intriguing and the best thing is, it's in Houston. :)

(okay there's a Supernatural and Heroes panel that I really want to go to) :)

Wow... I had no idea they were still around. I went to one of the earliest Revelcons (may have been #2) and had a good time.

I won't be going, but the con is under new management these past few years and is struggling to attract people (the not having a LJ or any mailers may be a factor). So I am glad you are going - and if you have time, a con report would be nice.

ps. gridlockjoe - love love love your icon.

Hmmm, they don't have an LJ? No wonder "Baby Fen" get their own panel ;)

well ...to be fair LJ is not the end all in fandom as there are still many fans participating on mailing lists and other bulletin boards (and my space - let's not forget myspace)....but I am very practical - you go where the fans are. Until you all head over to the brain implants...at which point I may have to re-consider.

I do hope it isn't! And yep, I strongly believe that eventually there will be another mass migration to some other space. It has to happen sometime, although everytime I mention it to friends they recoil in horror. Maybe they're picturing those implants ;)

nods - keep your expectations low - think of this as a fan gathering (the con has asked that people potluck to fill the con suite with food) and that way you will have fun.

11:45 14. Baby Fen – Meet Fans Under Age 25 – Find Out Where the Future Leads

I had to smile at this. I have no idea what the average age is for fen in general, but I always thought that here in LJ fen it averaged in the mid20s.

well the average age on fans who go to cons may be in their 30s (and in some cons that have been around for years - look to the 40s). A key factor may be one of finances perhaps? The big exception has always been anime which skews younger (or so I've been told).

I've always tried to picture fen as being more diverse than what I see in LJ, but only until Escapade did I get to see it. In mailing lists and YahooGroups I saw people closer to my own age, but as soon as I opened an LJ account the average age seemed to have dropped by about a decade. My friendslist has a few people closer to my own age (I'm 39) and I still hope that some of my friends from YahooGroups will come and play here, but so far it's been only a handful.

The big exception has always been anime which skews younger (or so I've been told).

It's *very* young in my experience with Spanish speaking fen. I've had very little luck in finding people close to my own age from Spain or Latin America.

The consumers of media who are also easy enough with technology are incredibly young. It makes sense, even as I try again and again to find people over 25. I've had some luck, but they tend to feel a lot of pressure to "grow up", to be interested in more acceptable "girl" things. I believe that expectations of "femininity," combined with limited access to online communities really squash older fen.
