Is anyone going to this convention? http://www.severalunlimited.com/revelcon/index.html

I plan to be there Saturday. So far the panels sound intriguing and the best thing is, it's in Houston. :)

(okay there's a Supernatural and Heroes panel that I really want to go to) :)

well the average age on fans who go to cons may be in their 30s (and in some cons that have been around for years - look to the 40s). A key factor may be one of finances perhaps? The big exception has always been anime which skews younger (or so I've been told).

I've always tried to picture fen as being more diverse than what I see in LJ, but only until Escapade did I get to see it. In mailing lists and YahooGroups I saw people closer to my own age, but as soon as I opened an LJ account the average age seemed to have dropped by about a decade. My friendslist has a few people closer to my own age (I'm 39) and I still hope that some of my friends from YahooGroups will come and play here, but so far it's been only a handful.

The big exception has always been anime which skews younger (or so I've been told).

It's *very* young in my experience with Spanish speaking fen. I've had very little luck in finding people close to my own age from Spain or Latin America.

The consumers of media who are also easy enough with technology are incredibly young. It makes sense, even as I try again and again to find people over 25. I've had some luck, but they tend to feel a lot of pressure to "grow up", to be interested in more acceptable "girl" things. I believe that expectations of "femininity," combined with limited access to online communities really squash older fen.
